The President’s Pen is a weekly blog written by Jonathan Smith, New Vision’s President and CEO about local economic development projects and initiatives. It also covers economic trends, workforce issues, business climate policies, and manufacturing news.
We are excited to share the newest STEM education video featuring Cubcrafters. The company builds and repairs light airplanes and is one of our region's business success stories. About ten years ago Cubcrafters went through a transformation from from a maintenance/repair operation into a manufacturer of small sport airplanes. It was a bold successful move and the company has added over 100 new jobs as a result. A big THANKS goes to Cubcrafters for showcasing their company, career opportunities and skills needed for success.
This new clip joins nine other STEM videos focusing on jobs and skills needed at local companies. Our office purposely teamed up with the Yakima Valley Technical Skills Center's Digital Media Department to produce videos. We wanted YV Tech students to produce these clips because our target audience for these clips is younger adults.
Cubcrafters' video allows younger adults to see what their company is all about and the careers they offer. Not every business is able to offer plant tours, visit classrooms or provide job shadows so these these videos are a great way of showcasing local employers and the key skills they need from current and future employees. As part of the overall initiative to advance STEM education our office is also building webpages to feature companies and videos on a regional STEM website. We will continue to expand on these pages in the future and will be slowly adding links to classroom projects and problems at the bottom of each employer page.
