The President’s Pen is a weekly blog written by Jonathan Smith, New Vision’s President and CEO about local economic development projects and initiatives. It also covers economic trends, workforce issues, business climate policies, and manufacturing news.
New Vision (Yakima County Development Association) has announced Jonathan Smith, who has a Masters in Communications and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga and has served as Executive Director of Grant County Economic Development since 2012, will succeed Dave McFadden as the new President/CEO.
Smith brings with him extensive experience as a Certified Economic Developer as well as an intimate familiarity with our region. Over his tenure with Grant County, Smith’s achievements include recruiting companies that have invested $1 billion in new facilities and created over 500 jobs as well as securing $25 million in infrastructure improvement funding, among a host of other accomplishments. “Smith was a strong candidate early in the process,” said Mike Broadhead, Interim Director. “We worked closely with our search firm during the selection process, and after interviewing our final four prospects we determined Smith was the ideal fit given his personality and experience in economic development.”
Smith will start with New Vision on October 21st and will be relocating to Yakima with his wife, Treva, and his three sons Adam (8), Marshall (5), and Anders (3). Smith met his wife, who is now a registered dietician, at the University of Idaho on his very first day on campus. “Now we will be celebrating our 15 year anniversary in Yakima,” said Smith. “We are excited to become a part of a vibrant, growing community. A community that actively takes charge of its own future to reach its full potential.” As for the boys, laughed Smith, “the kids love Slurpees and were ecstatic to see the numerous 7-11’s around town.”
