Yakima County Spurs Mill Redevelopment With New Road Plans

November 27, 2009 by Dave McFadden

Yakima County officials announced they will be investing approximately $700,000 over the next 24 months planning a major new road through the former Cascade Mill site. The additional arterial would provide an east-west connector and cross the Yakima River. The proposed route would alleviate increasing traffic using Terrace Heights Drive and provide improved access to the 224 acres mill site slated for redevelopment.

This project is a key part of the region’s puzzle to stay ahead of growth in Terrace Heights and to facilitate development at a key site within the urban area,” says Tammy Everts, business development director for New Vision, the Yakima County Development Association. “Both the city of Yakima and Yakima County planning and economic development divisions have been working jointly on these projects.”

The old lumber mill site, located next to Interstate 82, is being redeveloped for a mix of light industrial, retail, commercial, and residential development. The mill closed in 2006. Since that time, local public officials and the mill property’s owners have been developing plans for construction on the first 30 acres beginning in 2010.

We would like to have a tentative drawing of the proposed road development of the Mill to 57th st. Although we realize that this project is in the early stages, we would like to know what the plans are so far. Do you have that information that can be viewed at the courthouse?

    Hi Walt,

We appreciate you contacting our office. At this time, Yakima County nor our office has a map of this proposed corridor yet. However, Yakima County Planning Department would be who you’d want to contact for additional information.

    Thanks!
