Young Entrepreneurship Takes Root in the Yakima Valley

July 2, 2009 by Dave McFadden

Entrepreneurship is alive and well in the Yakima Valley as two local sisters feel there’s a business angle to that old adage about an apple a day keeping the doctor away. Danielle and Megan LaRiviere, Washington State University students, started a new company called Apple-A-Day.

Their company is built on one basic premise – that businesses and their employees could benefit by providing healthier snacks at the workplace. “The main reason we’re doing it is we want to promote a healthy lifestyle, and that begins with a healthy workplace” said Danielle, a sophomore majoring in entrepreneurship. The business will provide their clients with small refrigerators and deliver apples to the workplace each week; learn more at www.apple-a-day.com.

According to Jack Schultz, author of Boomtown USA, today’s youth will be the most innovative and entrepreneurial generation we’ve encountered. Our youth have never known life without computers, the Internet, and e-mail and through these avenues Schultz feels we will see great things coming from them. This trend is gaining traction in our own valley.

Tammy Everts, business development director with Yakima County Development Association says, "Since we started our entrepreneur support network we have come across dozens of people who are starting new businesses.  Danielle and Megan LaRiviere’s Apple-A-Day enterprise is a prime example.  They have a solid plan and the right tools for success. This will also provide our local business owners of another way to improve their workplace."
